Recently I opened whenever I open the “Photos” app on my iPhone, there is a small phone icon showing up in my iPad on its “photos” app or vice versa.
This small phone icon appeared on top right of the apps in the following screenshot.

This small phone icon appeared on top right of an app is known as a feature of Continuity.
Continuity feature can be found in most Apple products such as Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Watch.
Perhaps you have already set up this Handoff feature of Continuity which should be enabled and shall show you the small phone icons.
How to turn off this small phone icon in my iPhone apps?
You can turn off Handoff in the Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff > turn OFF Handoff.
